ROCKET CONSTRUCTION

EXPERIMENTAL 1inch DIAMETER ROCKET
This rocket was designed to fly on 2 x D12 Estes motors. A D12-3 first stage and a D12-7 upper stage.

BODY
The body is made from 1inch diameter cardboard tubing cut to the appropriate length. Cyno and PVA glues where used. The Fins are balsa . The motor mount tube is made from standard Estes BT50 tubing.

NOSECONE
The nose cone is home-made and turned on a Dlack and Decker drill from solid balsa. This is glued to a section of tubing. The nosecone is smoothed on the drill with fine sandpaper and then sealed with PVA glue before final coating/filling etc. Done carefully no balsa grain is visible.

RECOVERY SYSTEM
Home-made 3 feet long streamer made form an old kite tail.

FLIGHTS
Only one flight and only the first stage was recovered. The rocket boosted great on the D12-3 and coasted for a LONG! way before the distant glow (and sound) of the second stage could be seen. There was a good sound delay of what seemed a second between the glow of ignition and the sound of the engine. It dissapeared to a great height never to be seen again . My children Kayleigh and David found the first stage a long way from the pad.
